Two US Amateur qualifying tournaments took place in Washington Tuesday, and while no one from town has made it yet for the tournament to be held at Chambers Bay August 23-29, there is still hope for two Bellingham golfers.

What a Week at Sahalee
I had an absolutely fantastic time at the US Senior Open Championship this week. Fred Couples played so well, especially on Saturday, and came so close. But you never give Bernhard Langer a gift like that ugly eight Couples made at the 2nd and expect to have it returned. I followed the final group inside the ropes for a few holes today and watched for any changes of expression on Langer's face. I didn't see any. Not until he'd won, at least.
Here's a blog I wrote for Global Golf Post that the editor has kindly allowed me to reproduce here.

Blog 39 - Showtime at Sahalee

Showtime at Sahalee
The final practice round of the 31st US Senior Open Championship, being played at Sahalee CC this week, is in the books (if, indeed, practice rounds are put in books). The course is in superb shape and will play extremely firm and fast unless the USGA waters it overnight, which they won't because they understand that firm and fast is just better.

Freddie Fantastic
The first time I saw Fred Couples in the flesh (well, in real life) was at the World Matchplay Championship in England in 1989...or was it 1990? I remember him looking pretty lean and striking the ball incredibly powerfully. But I'd be willing to bet he's 10lbs lighter now than he was back then and driving the ball 20 yards farther. Today, I was present for his exhibition on the range at Sahalee CC in Sammamish, two days ahead of the start of this week's US Senior Open. And he was every bit as awesome as he was 21 years ago (or was it 20?)
