The Vikings needed something special today in the second round of the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional at Hiddenbrooke GC in Vallejo, Calif, after finishing round one in 19th place out of 20 teams on +32 320. The team did improve but sadly only by a shot, and on 63-over 639, Western is now 46 shots behind leader CSU Monterey Bay, and 33 behind fifth-placed Chico State - the team in the last qualifying position.
WWU was led by Chris Hatch who moved up ten spots with a four-over 76. The sophomore is in a four-way tie for 35th on 154. Senior Mark Strickland made a jump of 15 spots into a six-way tie for 59th on 158 following a 77. Brennan Emory is tied for 91st on 165 after an 84, Kyle Lindor is tied for 96th on 168, and Kyle Schrader, who took regional medalist honors in 2013, is 106th on 170 after shooting a very disappointing 90.
Patrick Skakel from Colorado-Colorado Springs took over as medalist leader on one-under 143, shooting a two-under 70 which matched the best round of the tournament.
Host Cal State East Bay’s Adam Stone and Ty Macias of Dominican CA, co-leaders after Monday’s first round, are now second and third respectively.
The tournament concludes on Wednesday with the top five squads and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team advancing to the national championships on May 18-22 at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, North Carolina.
