Continuing its streak of going to regionals every year since becoming a NCAA Division II member, the Western Washington University men’s team has earned the No.10 seed in the West Region and will compete in the South Central/West Regional beginning May 4, in Vallejo, Calif. Playing host to the three-day, 54-hole event at Hiddenbrooke GC will be Cal State East Bay.
The prize for the top five teams from the field of 20 (plus the two top individuals from non-qualifying teams) will be passage into the NCAA Division II National Championship to be played at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C. May 18-22.
Cal State Monterey Bay, champion in 2013, is the number one seed in the West, followed by Chico State, and Simon Fraser University. Dixie State is seeeed number four with Sonoma State No.5, Cal State Stanislaus No.6, Cal State East Bay No.7, Dominican CA No.8, Cal State San Bernardino No.9 and WWU No.10.
Cameron TX is the No.1 seed for the South Central Region. WWU head coach Luke Bennett said Chris Hatch, Kyle Schrader and Mark Strickland
will definitely be making the trip to California while the other two spots on the team are still up for grabs. Western will be looking to improve on its 2014 performance when it finished tenth at Regionals.
Earlier today, Hatch and Strickland were named as second team picks for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) All Star Team - a few hours, in fact, before Hatch finished second at the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) Champion of Champions tournament at the Home Course in Dupont. Hatch finished on 140 for the 36 holes, a shot behind winner Michael Haack. Bellingham's Craig Roth finished tied for sixth on 144 while son Cody was a shot behind and tied for 11th.
