Kyle Schrader; final round 69.
Western Washington University came in second at the eighth GNAC Championship which finished at the Coeur d'Alene Resort yesterday. The Vikings entered the final round in third place, but leapfrogged Northwest Nazarene with an eight-over 292. The team's 22-over 874 was two better than the defending champion, but 37 shots behind a rampant Simon Fraser University.
SFU's 277, 281 and 279 were the three best rounds of the tournament and, not surprisingly, the Burnaby, BC-based school provided the top four finishers in the individual standings headed by Bret Thompson who closed with a one-under 70 for a 54-hole total of eight-under 205.
The Vikings' Mark Strickland and Chris Hatch tied for eighth on six-over 219. Kyle Lindor was T11 on 220, Kyle Schrader finished on 222 after a final-round two-under 69 that tied him for 15th, and Anthony Allen, a kinesiology major and named a Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Star with a 3.31 GPA, tied for 19th on 227.
"It was good to move up each round,” said Vikings coach Luke Bennett. “Simon Fraser played impressive golf. And lots of credit for Kyle’s round. He spoke about stepping up at our team meeting last night (Monday) and he did that. He kept his emotions in check and played very relaxed.”
