WWU's Mark Strickland shot an even par 72 Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 217 to finish seventh at the Cal Baptist University Men’s Golf Invitational played at Eagle Glen GC in Corona, Calif. The senior from Mukilteo had begun the tournament on Monday with rounds of 70 and 75.
“It was really neat to watch Mark play with confidence, to have that fire,” said WWU coach Luke Bennett. “I believe that will carry over to the rest of the season. He drove the ball very well and that set the tone for his ball striking, chipping and putting.”
Strickland was just four strokes behind Dixie State's Kenny You, who finished top individual at three-under 213. You’s total was one stroke better than runner-up John Mikotic of Simon Fraser.
Chico State’s Alistair Docherty, who finished with the tourney’s best round of six-under par 66, tied for third on 215 with Forbes Collins of Dominican CA and BYU-Hawaii’s Alex Stuice. Chico State’s Lee Gearhart, who was tied for top honors following Monday’s two rounds, finished sixth on 216.
WWU, which entered the tourney No.20 in the latest Golfweek NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, shot a final-round 303 for a total of 896 - 32-over-par. The Vikings were tied for third after the opening round (295) and fifth after the second round (298).
Simon Fraser, ranked No.15 nationally, led wire-to-wire for a winning score of six-over 870. Sonoma State was second in the 15-team field, eight shots back, at 878, with No.5 Chico State third at 883.
WWU’s Chris Hatch tied for 18th on 223, Brennan Emory tied for 33rd on 227, Kyle Schrader was T54 on 233, and Kyle Lindor tied for 56th on 234.
