Chris Hatch shot a final round 71.
With a final round 302 (+14) Western Washington University completed the three rounds of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf West/South Central Regional at Grey Rock GC in Austin, Texas on 50-over 914, and in tenth place. The highlight of the final day for the Vikings was Chris Hatch's one-under 71 which vaulted him 29 places into a tie for 13th on the individual leaderboard.
Host St. Edward’s took team honors by 16 strokes on 878 (+14). Chico State moved up from sixth and Hawaii Hilo from fifth to tie for second on 894.
Defending champion Cal State Monterey Bay placed fourth on 897, while Western New Mexico came in fifth on 903 and Simon Frazer finished sixth on 904. The top six teams, and two individuals not on a qualifying team, advance to the National Championship May 19-23.
Hatch, a freshman, had three birdies and two bogeys and shot the only sub-par round of the tournament for WWU.
“Chris was so consistent,” said interim head coach Luke Bennett. “His future is very bright. He is going to be a huge part of the program.”
Western's Craig Crawford finished in a seven-way tie for 50th on 14-over 230, and Mark Strickland wound up in a seven-way tie for 57th on 231 after a final-round 83. Kyle Schrader tied for 96th on 243 following a closing 77, and Brennan Emory tied for 100th on 244 after a 77 of his own.
Midwestern State’s Derek Oland shot a five-under 67 to move up five spots and claim medalist honors on four-under 212 - ironic given that his school finished 20th and last in the team standings. St. Edward’s Enrique Livas finished three back after a closing 72.
