Thanks largely to Mark Strickland's second round 67, the best round of the day, the Western Washington men's team was able to complete the first two rounds of the CSU Monterey Bay Otter Invitational at 6,699-yard Black Horse GC in Seaside, Calif., in a tie for third on 15-over 591.
It's an encouraging start certainly, although the Vikings do find themselves 25 shots behind the hosts who lead the tournament on 10-under 566 after rounds of 285 and 281. The Otters, ranked No.8 nationally, hold a 15-shot advantage over second place Barry, the No.1-ranked team in Division II.
In the individual standings, Strickland is in a five-way tie for third on three-under 141. In his stellar second round, his best for WWU, he took just 29 shots to reach the turn. At the top of the leaderboard, Barry’s Mario Beltran leads at six-under 138 (68, 70), two shots better than Chico State’s Alistair Docherty (72, 68).
Vikings Kyle Schrader and David Fonua are tied for 20th on 149. Chris Hatch is tied for 30th on 152, while Brennan Emory is T67 on 158.
