The Vikings once again demonstrated superiority over their Great Northwest Athletic Conference rivals Tuesday, winning the GNAC title for the sixth straight year with a 16-shot victory at the Coeur d'Alene Resort in Coeur d'Alene, Ida. Western finished with a round of two-over 286, the best of the tournament, for a 54-hole total of 15-over 867. Saint Martin’s was second on 883, Simon Fraser third on 891.
“It’s always nice to win the conference championship,” said WWU coach Steve Card. “We had our moments, but we played well enough to win.”
Seniors Jake Webb and Dylan Goodwin led the Vikings and indeed finished atop the individual leaderboard on even-par 213 at the end of three rounds. In the playoff, Webb won with a birdie on the first extra hole.
Western's three other team members also finished in the top 20, Kyle Schrader tieing for fifth on 218 after a closing 69, Mark Strickland tieing for eighth on 223, and Evan Needham coming in 18th on 230. “I was really proud of Jake and Dylan," said Card, "and also with how Kyle and Mark bounced back in the final round. But that’s what we’ve done all season; people always seem to step up when someone is struggling.”
WWU next competes in the NCAA II West/South Central Regional, which the Vikings will host along with Saint Martin’s and the GNAC on May 6-8 at The Home Course in Dupont.
