Blog 254, 4/18/13 - Vikings Finish Third in California

mstrickThe Vikings couldn't make it three wins a row, but they did manage another creditable performance this week, coming in third out of 16 teams at the 40th annual Cal State Stanislaus Invitational, played at Turlock Golf & Country Club, ten miles south of Modesto, CA.
Fourth after Monday's 36 holes with scores of 300 (+12) and 305, WWU climbed one place on the leaderboard in the final round with a 310 that might not look great on paper but was, in fact, the second lowest round of a very difficult, windblown day. With a three-round total of 51-over 915, the Vikings finished 25 shots behind CSU Monterey Bay in second, and 27 behind the host which had a 15-stroke advantage after day one.
Leading the Vikings was Mark Strickland (right) whose closing 71 gave him second place outright in the individual standings. On four-over 220, the sophomore from Mukilteo wound up six shots behind winner Trevor Clayton of CSU Stanislaus. Behind Strickland came Dylan Goodwin who finished tied for 16th on 229, Jake Webb and Evan Needham who tied for 30th on 235, and Kyle Schrader who was T56 on 244.
The host Warriors won the team title for the 26th time in tournament history, and the 15th time in the last 18 years.
