dylangWestern Washington won its second consecutive tournament yesterday, shooting a final round four-under 284 at the St Martin's Invitational, played at the Home Course in Dupont, to come from four shots behind overnight leader Grand Canyon and win by six.
"Everyone just played great," said WWU head coach Steve Card. "It was a solid round all the way, and to do it on that golf course where the regionals are going to be played (in May) was really good."
The Vikings, ranked second last week in the first NCAA Division II West Regional rating of the year and No.8 in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches' Poll, completed the three rounds on seven-under 857 with Mark Strickland and Dylan Goodwin (right) both finishing tied for eighth individually on two-under 214.
Jake Webb, so often the team's leading player during the 2012-2013 season, came in T14 on even-par 216, Evan Needham tied for 42nd on six-over 222, and Kyle Schrader was tied for 52nd on 224.
Taking medalist honors by one stroke was Montana State Billings’ Gage Huft, who shot 6-under 66 for a winning total of 9-under 207 - one better than James Hall of Hawaii-Hilo.

clairerThe ladies' team, meanwhile, finished fifth at the Tarleton State University Doc Housewright Women's Golf Invitational at Harbor Lakes GC in Granbury, Texas., shooting a two-round total of 634 (+58). Claire Rachor (right) was the leading Viking finishing tied for sixth individually on nine-over 153.
"We improved greatly today in the final round in what I thought were tougher conditions than yesterday (Monday)," said WWU assistant coach Luke Bennett. "It was a pretty polished round."
Host and nationally No.4-ranked Tarleton State won by six strokes on 608 after a final round of 301, and Tarleton State's Jessica Pickwick shot two straight 73s to take medalist honors.
