Blog 245, 10/23/12 - Vikings Finish Third in California

ccrawfordWestern Washington University finished third in its final event of the Fall Season - the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational in Seaside, Calif. Tuesday as Craig Crawford (right) tied for 10th in medalist play.
The Vikings, ranked No.5 in the latest Golf World/Nike/College Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, had rounds of 302 and 295 for a 54-hole total of 897, one stroke in front of St. Edwards TX.
Monday’s suspended second round and the third and final round were both played Tuesday.
Cal State Monterey Bay won with a score of 874 (307-282), four strokes better than second-place Nova Southeastern (290-289) at 878.
“Overall, I’m not disappointed with our finish, despite the fact that we did not play our best golf,” said WWU coach Steve Card. “Finishing third was respectable, but the shot margin between us and the No.1 team in our region (Cal State Monterey Bay) and the No.1 team in the country (Nova Southeastern) was not what we came down here for.”
Crawford finished with rounds of 79 and 72 for a 54-hole total of 222. Jake Webb tied for 12th on 223 (72-73), Dylan Goodwin tied for 18th on 224 (76-75), and Mark Strickland tied for 32nd on 227 (75-76). Sandy Vaughan had to withdraw following the second round because of back problems.
Nova Southeastern’s Ben Taylor shot 4-under par 212 (71-70) to take medalist honors by three strokes.
WWU next competes in the St. Edwards Invitational on March 4-5. “We have a little bit of work to do during the off season to get prepared for the home stretch in the spring,” Card said.
