Western Washington began the third and final round of the Golfweek Division II Invite on the Crosswater course at Sunriver trailing leader CSU Stanislaus by just six shots. By the time they had finished the 12th hole, the Vikings were seven-under-par for the day, leading by five, and looking very good for their second tournament win in a row having romped to a 17-stroke victory at their own Viking Invitational last week.
But the wheels came off big time down the stretch. With four bogeys and two doubles counting in the final three holes, the team shot a collective 13-over for the final six and dropped into a tie for third on 14-over 878, one shot behind Grand Canyon in second and two behind winner Hawaii-Hilo which WWU beat by 19 shots at Bellinghm GCC eight days ago.
A week after winning his first collegiate title, Mark Strickland finished top Viking in sixth place on one-over 217. Evan Needham, making his season debut for the team, tied for eighth on 219. Jake Webb shot a closing 72 to finish tied for 12th on 220, and Sandy Vaughan tied for 41st on 227 after struggling to a final round 80. Dylan Goodwin disappointed for a second straight tournament, winding up in a tie for 48th on 231.
Colorado School of Mines's Michael Lee won the individual competition by five strokes, completing the 54 holes on 11-under 205.

WWU's Mark Strickland and Ann Bourland were named GNAC players of the week for September 23-29.

Rick Weihe finished tied for 93rd after 36 holes of strokeplay at the US Senior Amateur at Mountain Ridge CC in West Caldwell, NJ, earlier this week and thus did not progress to matchplay. The Bellinghm GCC member shot rounds of 76 and 77 on the 100-year-old Donald Ross-designed course and came in four shots shy of the 11-man playoff for the final matchplay berth.

Congratulations to Paul Berube and Shane Clark who won last weekend's Three Ring Circus at Lake Padden with a Gross 66. Mark Smith and Joel Wark won the Net prize with a 61.
