Western Washington University's Dylan Goodwin proved what a fine player he is by finishing tied for fifth at the Northwest Open Invitational, which finished yesterday at Wine Valley GC in Walla Walla.
The senior-to-be from Mukilteo, winner of the Snohomish County Amateur in May and named a third-team NCAA Division II PING All-American in June, completed the tournament's 54 holes on seven-under 209 after rounds of 68, 72, and 69. He finished five shots behind winner Brandon Kearney, an assistant professional at Bend Golf and Country Club in Oregon, who opened with a superb 63 on Monday then cruised home with a 71 and closing 70.
Darren Black and Derek Barron shared second on 207 while Russel Grove was third a further shot behind. Goodwin shared fifth with Oswego Lake's Scott Erdmann.
Mark Strickland, a sophomore at Western who won last month's Everett Amateur and who will surely be a regular in the Viking men's team this coming season, finished a shot behind Goodwin in a tie for seventh.
Matt Cowell, an assistant pro at Lake Padden, finished 18th on 214; Luke Bennett, Director of Instruction at Lake Padden, was tied for 30th on 217; Western's Sandy Vaughan tied for 54th on 221; and Viking Jack Kelly was T67 on 224.

Congratulations to Charlie Myers and Denny Evans who shared first place in this year's Lake Padden Challenge with a Gross 75. Rob McCombie won the net prize with 67.
