Blog 220, 7/6/12 - Rawitzer Finishes T19 at Sahalee

rawitzerdrivesMatt Rawitzer (right) was looking for a second consecutive round in the 60s today to vault himself up into the top ten at the 19th Sahalee Players Championship. But after making a double-bogey six on the opening hole, the Bellingham native was always struggling.
To his credit, Rawitzer got his round back on track reaching the turn in one-over 37, but bogeys at the 10th, 12th and 13th stalled whatever progress he was making. A lone back-nine birdie at the 377-yard 14th and four pars to finish saw him home in 38 and round in 75, giving him a four-round total of five-over 293 and a tie for 19th place.
At the top of the leaderboard, a playoff was needed to separate three players - Kevin Penner, Chris Williams and California's Ben Geyer - who tied for the lead after regulation play on nine-under 279. Penner, a resident of Sammamish and a senior-to-be at UNLV, birdied the first play-off hole, the Par 5 18th, to win what he described as 'by far the biggest title of my career'.
Western's Nick Varelia struggled all week finishing 61st on 36-over 324.
