Nick Varelia, the 2011-12 Greater Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Year after an impressive season with the Vikings, shot a best-of-the-day 67 in the final round of the 86th WSGA Men's Amateur Championship and, with a 72-hole total of three-under 281, finished in second place ten shots behind the winner Chris Williams (right) of Moscow, Id.
Varelia's shot six birdies and two bogeys on the Eagle's Pride course in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, jumping four places from his overnight sixth. It was an impressive performance from the player recently named a Ping West Region All-Star but not nearly enough to prevent Williams from claiming his first State Amateur title. The University of Washington Junior shot rounds of 67, 67, 69 and 68 for a 13-under total of 271.
The only other player to finish under par was Jeremy Wendelken, a senior at Sonoma State and the 2010 State Amateur champion, who wound up in third on two-under 282.
Western's Dylan Goodwin, second overnight, shot 74 to drop into a tie for fifth alongside teammate Mark Strickland who shared the lead after 36 holes with two 67s but fell away with subsequent rounds of 74 and 77.
