Blog 212, 6/14/12 - Bennett Shoots 68 in Oregon, Climbs Into Top Ten

lukebWith a fine four-under 68 round the 6,922-yard Broken Top course in Bend, Ore., Luke Bennett (right) climbed 19 places up the final round leaderboard at the Oregon Open Invitational, Thursday.
The Director of Instruction at Lake Padden finished in a tie for sixth on three-under 213, nine shots behind winner Brian Thornton who closed with a seven-under 65. Matt Cowell shot a level-par 72 to finish tied for 24th on two-over 218.

Four WWU Vikings are in the top ten after three rounds of the WSGA Men's Amateur Championship at Eagle's Pride GC in Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Mark Strickland, who began the day tied for the lead, carded a disappointing 75 but is in second place on four-under 209. After two 67s, the redshirt freshman sat alongside UW's Chris Williams at the top of the leaderboard, but the world's sixth-ranked amateur opened a six-shot lead after shooting a 69 today. "I burned the edges all day, and missed two short putts," Strickland said after the round. "I don't know what the difference was, it just didn't click. But I'll be back out again tomorrow."
Dylan Goodwin fired a 69 of his own to jump into a tie for third on one-under 212, while Nick Varelia shot 72 and is tied for sixth on 214. Sandy Vaughan, who shot 69, is two further back and tied for tenth.
Former Viking Sean Packer is tied for 14th on 219, and current team member Jake Webb is T27 on 223. A shot further back is Pro Golf Discount's Kevin Stray who shot a 79 today. Jack Kelly shot 78 and is tied for 41st, and Lynden Willy Scholten is down into 59th position after struggling to an 83.
