Matt Cowell is the best-placed of the three Bellingham-based professionals after two rounds of the Washington Open Invitational at Glendale CC in Bellevue. The Lake Padden PGA apprentice pro opened with a 77 yesterday but followed it with a two-over 73 today that saw him shoot 22 places up the leaderboard into a tie for 33rd.
Cowell's Lake Padden colleague Luke Bennett shot a 77 to complete the first 36 holes on 153 and tied for 57th, while the Country Club's Mike Montgomery had a disappointing 80 that dropped him down into a tie for 73rd on 156.
Leading the tournament is Nationwide Tour player Jeff Gove from Seattle who established a three-shot lead after a brilliant six-under 65 today. Tied for second on 138 are the defending champion Tim Feenstra and Semiahmoo's Jeff Coston. Andres Gonzales is up into a tie for fifth after carding a three-under 68.
