Persistant rain at Glendale CC in Bellevue made it a tough day for scoring at the 86th Washington Open Invitational Monday with 85 of the state's best golfers turning in an average score of 74.39.
Three Bellingham club professionals are in the field, but none could do better than 76 which the Country Club's Mike Montgomery and Lake Padden's Luke Bennett posted to finish the day tied for 45th. Matt Cowell, also of Lake Padden, was a shot further back on six-over-par and tied 55th.
Leading the tournament after round one is Darren Black of Rainier GCC who shot a fine four-under 67. The only other man to beat 70 was Spring Hill CC's Glen Griffith. Andres Gonzales who won last month's Soboba Classic on the Nationwide Tour, shot a one-over 72 and is tied for 13th, while former PGA Tour player Jeff Gove is part of a seven-way tie for third following a 70.
