Even though four of its five team members placed in the top 15, WWU could do no better than a collective third place at the Grand Canyon University Fall Invitational which finished yesterday at the Wigwam Golf & Country Club Gold Course in Litchfield Park, AZ.
Defending the title they won last year, the Vikings shot rounds of 289 (+1), 289 (+1), and 286 (-2) to complete the tournament on level-par 864, four strokes behind Colorado-CO Springs in second and five behind winner Chico State.
Leading the team was Dylan Goodwin who finished with a disappointing 77 but still came in under-par on 215 (-1). He finished tied for 7th alongside four others including Western's Nick Varelia. Jake Webb, fresh off his GNAC Player of the Week Award for his performance at St Martin's last week, was tied for 13th on one-over 217, and Sandy Vaughan tied for 15th on two-over 218. Mark Strickland tied for 75th on 19-over 235.
Chico State's Kyle Souza was medalist firing rounds of 69, 70 and 70 to finish three clear of second place on seven-under 209.
“Overall, I think we had a decent tournament,” said WWU head coach Steve Card. “We shot even par, which I felt was very respectable. I was disappointed in not winning, but we lost to two very good golf teams. We continued to improve and I felt this was a much better performance than at the previous two events. So, I’m happy with the progress and I know there is a lot more potential for us to get even better.”
Western has now finished in the top three in its first three outings of the 2011/12 season, but it will be looking for a win at the Chico State Invitational at Sevillano Links in Corning, CA., October 17th and 18th.
