Bellingham's Fred Urquhart and Rick Weihe recorded strong final rounds at the Washington State Senior Men’s Amateur Championship Thursday to finish inside the top ten. Using home course advantage, Urquhart, who won this tournament in 2004, shot a one-over 73 to complete the 54 holes on five-over 221 and tied for sixth. Weihe, himself a former champion (1998) and  Bellingham GCC member, shot a level-par 72 to tie for 10th on seven-over 223.
Not far behind was Lake Padden Superintendent Scott McBeath who closed with a 75 in his first state senior tournament to finish on eight-over 224 and tied for 16th. Vince Crocker shot a 73, by far his best round of the week, to post 233 (+17), Bill Hager was four strokes further back, and Jerry Dallas and Jon Rawitzer finished on 241.
Bellevue's Tom Brandes won the event in a five-hole play-off with Gig Harbor's Jim McNelis. Both players finished regulation holes on three-under 213, then birdied the 1st extra hole before parring the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. At the 5th, Brandes who made it to matchplay at this year's US Senior Amateur and won the Washington Senior Open by a shot over Jeff Coston, hit his approach to 15 feet and holed the putt to win the State Senior title at his first attempt.

North Bellingham golfer Ted King was runner-up in the super-senior division with rounds of 77-76-77. King, the 2010 Pacific Northwest Super Senior Amateur Champion, finished nine strokes behind winner Ron Petersen of Coquitlam, BC., who closed with a 73 for a three-round total of five-over 221. Bellingham's Ronald Lynch, Ben Denson and Al Reinikka finished well down the leaderboard on 264, 266 and 273 respectively.
