rawitzerMatt Rawitzer (right) has made the cut at the Canadian Amateur Championship being played at the Stanley Thompson-designed Niakwa CC and Donald Ross-designed Elmhurst CC in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The Bellingham native, now the fourth-ranked amateur in Washington and No. 194 in the country according to Golfweek.com, began the 72-hole strokeplay tournament Thursday with a one-under-par 70 on the 6,618-yard Niakwa CC course. He followed it up today with a three-over 74 at 6,716-yard Elmhurst.

kstrayCommiserations to Pro Golf Discount's Kevin Stray (left) who finished tied for fourth at this week's WSGA Men's Mid-Amateur Championship at Loomis Trail after heading into the second round with a one-stroke lead. Stray, a Master Club-Fitter at the golf retailer's Guide-Meridian branch, opened the 36-hole event with a two-under 70, but struggled to a 76 in Thursday's second round to finish on two-over 146 - two behind the winner, Everett's Stephen Lee.
Matt Cowell, who works in the pro shop at Lake Padden, was sixth on 147. Rick Weihe was 18th on 154, Bill Hager T25 on 158, Morgan McGowan T36 on 163, Fred Urquhart T44 on 166, James Hawley and Vince Crocker T48 on 167, John Hulbert T52 on 168, and James Fox 71st on 190. In the women's championship, Catherine Allen finished eighth out of 16 players. Rounds of 86 and 81 saw her finish six shots behind winner Lisa Smego.

jcostonCommiserations also to Semiahmoo's Jeff Coston (left) who missed the cut at the PGA Championship after shooting nine-over 149 (76, 73) for two rounds at the very demanding Atlanta Athletic Club. It wasn't all bad news for the 55-year-old instructor, however. He may have finished T119, but he will forever be able to say he beat Tiger Woods at a major championship. Woods, who missed his first cut ever at the PGA, finished a shot behind Coston on 150.
And the former world number one wasn't the only major champion Coston beat. He also outscored Louis Oosthuizen (150), Vijay Singh (150), Graeme McDowell (152), Larry Nelson (153), John Daly (153), Darren Clarke (154), Rich Beem (155), Lucas Glover (155), Jose-Maria Olazabal (156), and Jerry Pate (156).
With two rounds to go, Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley share a one-stroke lead over DA Points, John Senden, Scott Verplank and Jim Furyk.
