Williams; brilliant 66-66 finish.
Matt Rawitzer's fine play at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Martis Camp in Truckee CA., came to an abrupt and disappointing end this afternoon. At three-under for the tournament after three holes of his final round, the Oregon State Junior and Bellingham native was looking good for a finish inside the top ten. But he failed to birdie the 568-yard 4th hole for the first time in the week, then went on a desperate run that saw him drop nine shots over his next ten holes. Bogeys at the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 12th were followed by his first double-bogey of the tournament, at the 461-yard 13th, and then a triple bogey six at the short 14th. A birdie four at the long 15th was scant consolation for Rawitzer who eventually signed for a seven-over 79 and a tie for 29th.
The University of Washington's Chris Williams shot a second consecutive 66 to win the tournament on 11-under 277 and do his chances of Walker Cup selection no harm at all.
