Blog 144, 7/27/11 - Rawitzer Starts Well at Pacam

martiscampBellingham's Matt Rawitzer is off to an excellent start at the 72-hole Pacific Coast Amateur Championship being played at the Tom Fazio-designed Martis Camp Club (right) in Truckee, CA. The Oregon State junior shot a one-under 71 in Tuesday's first round, making him one of just 17 players in the 84-man field to break the par of 72. He finished the day tied for eighth, four behind co-leaders Mitchell Evanecz and Derek Ernst.
Rawitzer was one-under through five holes, but bogeyed three of his next four to reach the turn in two-over 38. He rebounded with a birdie at the 10th, however, and made two more birdies for a fine inward run of 33.

Interesting fact about Matt - He is 320th in the lastest R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings. 320th might not sound so great, but when you consider how many amateur golfers there are in the world, we'd say it's pretty darn impressive.

Jessi Gebhardt finished tied for 26th at the LPGA Futures Tour's International at Concord in Concord, NH., at the weekend, shooting a final round 72 for a three-round total of one-under 215. "Today was a rollercoaster - five birdies, three bogeys, and a double," she said on her blog. "The good thing is I’m making birdies and giving myself many opportunities to score. I have so many positive things to take from this event and move onto the next!"
Gebhardt pays in this week's Alliance Bank Classic in Syracuse, NY.

One of the most enjoyable tournaments of the Lake Padden Men's Club season, the Evans Scramble, is this Saturday (July 30th). Places are running out so contact the pro shop asap to register your team and schedule a tee-time. The format is quite unconventional, so listen (read) up: Four-Man teams play two, two-man scrambles for the first six holes. After six holes players switch partners. Switch again for the final six, so each golfer plays six holes with the other three members of his team. Teams will combine two Gross scores on each hole. Each player must use a minimum of two drives per six holes (total of six for the whole round). Team Net and Gross by division.
