Blog 138, 7/10/11 - Gebhardt Looking Forward; Card to Chair NCAA Committee

jessigebhardtIt says a lot about Jessi Gebhardt (right); first, that she would consent to a brief email interview the morning after shooting successive 82s at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO., during her first ever US Womens Open, and completing 36 holes a long way south of the cut-line; second that she made no attempt to pass the blame for her disappointing performance; and third that she chose to emphasize the positives from the week and already has her sights set on the future.
"Friday was a tough day," she admits. "I had some great holes though and hit a lot of good shots. The overall experience - the fans, the crowds, signing autographs, and seeing all the players - was amazing."
Gebhardt says that despite not playing anywhere near her potential, she will look back on her US Womens Open debut fondly, and use the experience to her advantage. "I'll remember it forever," she says. " I know I didn't play how I wanted, but I did try and now I know what I need to do to improve. I'm young, inexperienced, and have a lot to learn. But I'm looking forward to my future."

stevecardIn a press release issued by the Athletics Department at Western Washington University yesterday, it was announced that the Associate Director of Athletics and head men’s golf coach Steve Card (right) will serve as chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Committee during the 2011-12 academic year. The appointment was made by the committee. Card’s term will begin September 1st. He is beginning the final year of his four-year term as a member of the committee.
“This is a great opportunity for me personally and professionally,” said Card. “It has been an honor to serve on this committee, and I look forward to the coming year.”
Card, who has coached 23 All-Americans at Western and been named conference Coach of the Year eight times, is beginning his 22nd year as Western’s associate AD of business and financial affairs and 19th season directing the men’s golf program.
