George Fazio was some sort of evil genius when he designed the East Course. I'm really not sure how he did it (or why for that matter), but 15 holes play uphill in some fashion.
Really George? Just three downhill holes?
Every green is like the top of a squashed army helmet, with subtle breaks in some flattish spots and slopes everywhere else. It seems like every putt goes up and over some sort of ridge or hump. Donald Ross would have been proud.
I was blown away today by the pressure of the event. I am right there by Monty's side - giving yardages, club selection, reading greens, etc., but yet I feel haplees, unable to contribute anything. There was one point today when Mike had a five-footer for par and I was more nervous than he was. I just wanted to get up there and hit the putt myself (us Type As are that way I guess.) Thankfully, he made the putt right in the heart.
Speaking of the Golf Channel, the back of Monty's head was in the opening sequence of TGC's coverage today at 2pm. That was the extent of the coverage for us today - we had an early tee-time and a tough back nine. After making the turn in one-under 35, Monty had three loose swings in the final four holes and ended up with 79. Three swings is all it takes in events like these to go from good to uh, not-so-good. Believe me, I feel for Mike; I was there. But that's over and now looking forward to tomorrow's second round on the more receptive West Course.
