Bellingham GCC head professional Mike Montgomery and Sudden Valley GCC assistant professional Tyler Wong shot rounds of 75 and 78 respectively in yesterday's second round of the Washington Open Invitational at Glendale CC in Bellevue, effectively taking them out of contention for the state title.
After one-over 72s in Monday's first round, both were tied for 16th and just five shots out of the lead held by Western alum Tim Feenstra, the 2007 champion, and PGA Tour player Andres Gonzales. But Montgomery's four-over round saw him drop into a tie for 28th on five-over 147, while Wong's 78 sent him plungeing to T46 on 150.
Feenstra, an assistant at Broadmoor GC in Seattle but originally from Lynden, now leads the tournament alone after posting a superb eight-under 63 on Tuesday. On 12-under 130, the Western alum is six clear of Derek Berg and PGA Tour player Michael Putnam who rebounded from a slightly disappointing first-round 71 with a 65 yesterday. Ryan Malby is fourth on 138, Gonzales fifth a further shot back after a second-round 72.
