Blog 120, 5,16,11 - Bellingham Professionals Tied For 16th After First Round at Washington Open

Tyler Wong, the assistant professional at Sudden Valley GCC, and Bellingham GCC Head Professional Mike Montgomery are tied for 16th after round one of the 85th Washington Open Invitational being played at Glendale CC in Bellevue. Both players shot one-over 72s on the 6,525-yard layout and will begin the second round tomorrow morning five strokes behind co-leaders Tim Feenstra of Broadmoor GC and PGA Tour player Andres Gonzales.
Derek Berg, playing the course he has worked at as an assistant for several years, is third after a 68, and defending champion Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo is tied for 10th after a 71. Also on 71 is Gonzales's fellow PGA Tour player Michael Putnam.
Wong, playing alongside Berg and his amateur partner, fired a nine-under 62 with father Randy to lead the better-ball pro-am event  by one stroke from three pairs.

In yesterday's Korey Pro-Am (Camp Korey is a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses in Carnation), Richard Williams of Bellingham's Pro Golf Discount store on Meridian St. was part of professional Brian Thornton's team (TaylorMade adidas team) that won by one shot with a score of 120. Thornton, a TaylorMade adidas player who works at Meridian Valley CC in Kent, shot a solid two-under 69. "I played so-so in what was only my second round of the year," said Wallace.
