Blog 119, 5/15/11 - WWU Finishes 11th at Nationals

katiesharpeThe Western Washington women's golf team bought its season to a close with an 11th place finish at the NCAA Division II National Chamionship Saturday, shooting a final round 314 for a four-round total of 1,263 (+111).
"It was a little disappointing," said coach Bo Stephan. "We were somewhat competitive except for the first day when we shot ourselves in the foot (336). All in all it was a good season."
The Vikings' best final round came from Katie Sharpe (right) who negotiated the 6,111 yards of the Meadows Course at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI., in three-over 77 to complete 72 holes on 316 (+28) and tied for 38th, seven places behind leading Viking Sophie Elstrott whose final-round 78 saw her finish on 311.
Kara Zitzman shot 79 for a four-round total of 320 (T49), Claire Rachor shot 80 for 322 (T53), and Christa Goldie also had an 80 and finished on 324 (T58).
Nova Southeastern won its third national title in a row shooting a final-round 300 for a total of 1,157. The Fort Lauderdale, FL-school led all four days and won by 28 strokes from Rollins in second. Florida Southern was third, 39 strokes back.
Not surprisingly perhaps, Nova golfers fiished in the top three spots with Taylor Collins winning individual honors convincingly on ten-under 278 despite a final-round 75.
