Blog 109, 412/11 - Disappointing Start for Vikings in California

dylangoodwinThe Vikings' incredible form of the fall season has deserted them of late. Rather than picking off tournament wins which it did with satisfying monotony before Christmas, the team has had a couple of fourth-place finishes recently, and yesterday finished the first day of the CSU Stanislaus Invitational in eighth place on 25-over 601, 19 shots behind the hosts who lead after two rounds of 291.
“It was not a good day for us,” said coach Steve Card. “We were just not sharp at all, but hopefully we can rebound tomorrow (today) with a good round.”
Leading Western, ranked No.5 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America Golf World/NIKE Golf Top 25, is Dylan Goodwin (left) who shot 75, 70 on the 6,641-yard Turlock Country Club course to move into a tie for sixth. Brian Barhanovich is tied for 29th on 150 (71-79), Nick Varelia is tied for 52nd on 153 (76-77), Sandy Vaughan is tied for 55th on 154 (79-75) and Xavier Dailly is tied for 68th on 157 (79-78). CSU San Bernardino's Kenny Pigman leads in medalist play after rounds of 67 and 68 to complete the first 36 holes on nine-under 135.

TX. No one on the team, ranked fifth in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 and fourth in the West Region, was able to break 80 and, on 46-over 334, Western is tied for 10th out of 21 teams on 46-over 334, 28 shots behind the leader, host Tarleton.
"We played awful," said coach Bo Stephan. "There was no question that it was a difficult course, especially with the wind, but a lot of other teams handled it better than we did. If we can come back with a good round tomorrow, we could at least jump a lot of teams."
Katie Sharpe (above) leads the Vikings after an 80. The senior from Bellingham is currently tied for 23rd in medalist play. Kara Zitzman is tied for 41st on 83, Claire Rachor shot 85 to be tied for 53rd, Christa Goldie is tied for 64th after an 86 and Alex Taylor shot 87 to finish the day T71. Best round of the day was Carla Cooper's (Tarleton) two-over 74.
