The Vikings finished the first day of the Pioneer Shootout in Vallejo, CA., in second place, two shots behind Division II rival Chico State. With winds gusting to 25mph, Western shot a opening six-over 294 but struggled in the afternoon, posting a 15-over 303. “We didn’t play very well in the afternoon and squandered a very good morning round,” said Western coach Steve Card.  “The conditions were difficult as it was very breezy, but we’re right in there.”
Dylan Goodwin finished day one in a three-way tie for third at even par 147 after rounds of 72 and 75. He is four strokes behind leader Kenny Pigman from Cal State San Bernardino. Chico State’s Kyle Souza is second on 146.
Second best Viking on Monday was Brian Barhanovich who is tied for seventh after rounds of 75 and 74. Xavier Dailly is tied for 10th on 150, Nick Varelia is tied for 17th on 152, and Sandy Vaughan tied for 25th on 155. Sam Ayotte, playing as an individual, is tied for 23rd on 154.
