Equipment Test 5 - Kikkor Eppik

It's easy to be mesmerized by new golf clubs boasting fancy-sounding technology. Some of it definitely does represent genuine innovation that will help you hit the ball farther and closer to the hole, and ultimately shoot lower scores. But a lot of it is just the same old stuff hidden behind cool new graphics. Here, as well as giving you the manufacturers' blurb on their own products, we'll add our own thoughts - Totally Independent Golf Equipment Reviews (or T.I.G.E.R. for short) - and identify the gear we think really will help your game and that which might just be an unnecessary, but expensive, addition to what you already have. If you'd like to get involved with the testing, click here to contact us.

The above blurb appears at the start of every equipment review on Bellinghamgolfer.com as the majority of reviews involve clubs, of course. For the first time though, we're featuring a shoe; a shoe from a relatively new brand that came to our attention a few months ago. The founder and CEO (or 'Captain Sauce' as he refers to himself on the company's web site) is a guy called James Lepp whom many of you will probably be familiar with. A native of British Columbia, Lepp graduated from the University of Washington in 2006, the year after he was individual champion at the NCAA National Championship at Caves Valley GC in Owings Mills, MD. Lepp  turned professional soon after leaving UW and, in 2007, joined the Canadian Tour on which he has two victories - the 2003 Greater Vancouver Charity Classic (as an amateur) and the 2007 Greater Vancouver Classic. In 2008, while still active on the Canadian Tour, Lepp began thinking seriously about putting his business degree to good use by setting up a golf shoe and apparel company, and in September Kikkor Golf became a registered trademark. The start-up's first shoes hit the shelves in April of this year and now Lepp has more or less abandoned his playing career (he played in just one Canadian Tour event in 2010) in favor of running his blossoming business. Bellinghamgolfer supports Kikkor Golf in its crusade to fit the world's golfers (predominantly young golfers) with its distinctive and refreshingly affordable shoes, not just because Kikkor shoes are distinctive and refreshingly affordable, but also because the company has a warehouse on Slater Road, a mile north of Bellingham International Airport.

Looks:  Well, that depends of course. I may be 'too old' for Eppiks, but I like them. 9
Performance:
Extremely comfortable, even out of the box. Impressively stable too. 8
Available in:
7, 8, 8½, 9, 9½, 10, 10½, 11.
Ideal For:
Golfers considerably younger and hipper than me.
Briefly:
Some might dismiss the Eppik as a shoe for the casual golfer, more concerned with their 'look' than their score. But that misses the point. While style is at the core of what Kikkor is doing, it is definitely not peddling a second-rate product behind a catchy name and groovy logo. The naysayers would do well to remember the driving force behind Kikkor Golf. James Lepp is a professional golfer who knows how a golf shoe should feel and perform.

KIKKOR EPPIK

In Theory:
- Sure Foot Stability System
- Premium action leather
- KIKKOR Komfort Foam Technology
- 1-Year Limited Waterproof Warranty
- CHAMP Q-LOK Scorpion spikes

The support shank, filon midsole and Champ Q-Lok Scorpion spikes give you all the stability and traction you need. And the Komfort Foam will conform to your feet the more you wear it, making these shoes that much more comfortable the longer you have them.

In Reality:
Open the box of your new Kikkor Eppiks and you'll find a card. On it is written the warranty information, instructions on how to set up an account at kikkor.com where you'll get product information, discounts, promotion details, etc, and a message from the company that says 'We know there are many shoe choices out there, albeit mostly for your Dad, but regardless, thanks for choosing Kikkor.'
Well, I am the 'Dad' (no, not the 'Daddy' perhaps, but definitely a Dad) so I suspect I may be a minimum of 10 years outside of Kikkor's target audience. Indeed, immediately after putting them on for the first time, my wife sniggered, and asked if I was making some desparate attempt to regain my lost youth. An hour later, however, while coaching a First Tee class at Lake Padden, a number of the students seemed stunned at the transformation. 'Wow, they are the coolest golf shoes I've ever seen," one boy said, barely disguising his surprise at how a not very young coach could be wearing so fashionable an item.
It's true, Kikkor golf shoes probably won't find too many takers among the more mature set. These shoes are unashamedly designed for teens and twenty-somethings who arrive at the course on their skateboard or BMX.
But don't be thinking the Eppik is all style and no substance. It is highly unlikely you'll ever find another shoe as comfortable as this below $100. But the Eppik started life at just $79, and now you can purchase a pair of the 2010 model at kikkor.com for just $55 (the 2011 models will be available in February). No, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a top of the range FootJoy or Ecco shoe, but they are considerably more expensive, and probably don't do much for the golfer/skater's image.
I've not owned my Eppiks for a year obviously, so can't really comment on the quality of the waterproofing, suffice to say it's rained plenty in Bellingham the last few days and no leaking has occurred yet.
If you've already celebrated your 35th birthday but are thinking about how you might look in a pair of Eppiks, I suggest getting Black as any of the other color options (Blaze, White, Ocean - see left) might expose you to a certain amount of ridicule from your terribly sophisticated friends. If, on the other hand, you hang with similarly young folk who are way more impressed with your funky footwear than your choice of driver, then Kikkor is definitely where you should be at (did I say that right?).
