The Vikings got their 2010-2011 season off to a great start Saturday, winning the St Martin's Invitational at Olympia CC by five shots from California's Chico State.
The hard work was done in the first two rounds on Friday when the team recorded a superb opening 273 and followed it with a four-under 280.
On 15-under 553, they began the final day ten clear of Chico State and more or less guaranteed the win with a six-under-par 278. Chico State matched Western's opening 273, but it was enough only to half the gap.
Senior Xavier Dailly from Burlington was medalist with rounds of 67, 69 and 70 and a 54-hole total of seven-under-par 206. Dylan Goodwin, who transferred to Western from UW in the summer, came in two shots back and tied for third while Patrick Boag and Nick Varelia also finished in the top ten - Boag tieing for seventh on 210, Varelia tieing for ninth on 211. Sandy Vaughn who had opened with two 74s, shot a three-under 68 Saturday to finish tied for 24th.
“It’s a great start for us,” said Western coach Steve Card (18th year), “I’m very happy to win the tournament, but even more pleased with us shooting under par all three rounds.”
The team gets right back into action on Monday with the start of the Viking Invitational at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
